Depression and anxiety are said to be linked together. Nevertheless, this may no be so at all times. To understand depression and anxiety, it would help to understand each first. Certain causes of anxiety and depression may be the same though.
The Cause of Anxiety
It is believed that one cannot attribute one incident as the cause of anxiety. It is actually said to be caused by a combination of physical and environmental triggers. For instance, bad experiences may cause some people to fear the same situations.
This brings them to react to the situating with anxiety even if the situation is not that extraordinary or does not cause anxiety in other people. Scientists would attribute anxiety to a biochemical imbalance in the brain. And so they usually recommend natural food supplements or medication to remedy the situation. Some theories suggest though that anxiety is a learned behavior. And that it can only be treated by unlearning the said behavior through change in lifestyle and through therapy.
Common Causes of Anxiety and Depression
If people look closely at brain function, it would be said that much of the cause of anxiety and depression is really on the abnormalities in hormonal levels. This causes abnormalities in the brain especially since they serve as messengers to the brain. With these abnormalities, certain processes in the brain become abnormal too thereby causing depression. When more stress hormones are secreted, anxiety and depression could also develop.
Without getting too technical, anxiety and depression can be caused by certain difficult situations. For one, stress at work could trigger such reactions and conditions. Major changes in life like job loss or divorce could also trigger anxiety and then depression. And of course, the tendency to suffer anxiety and depression is hereditary as well.
Depression does not follow anxiety in all situations though. It would normally depend on the situation that triggered the anxiety. Certain situations are simple yet cause you anxiety. But they do not cause depression. A deeper reason such as grief, on the other hand, may already cause depression if not handled well.
In such situation, it is recommended that one conquer the cause of anxiety first. By doing so, depression would also be relieved.
